Sonny McKay

Shire of Derby/West Kimberley, WA

Sonny is very much a newcomer to the environmental health scene. After moving to Derby WA from the Northern Rivers region of NSW in 2014, Sonny wanted to start a career hopefully building on his existing Environmental Science Degree.

Recognising the link between science and health Sonny was lucky enough to gain employment as a Trainee Aboriginal Environmental Health Field Support Officer at the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley, here he was quick to develop a passion for Aboriginal Environmental Health. Realising a career path that was not only interesting and rewarding but more importantly improved the lives of Aboriginal people, Sonny decided to pursue a Post Graduate qualification in Environmental Health while completing his traineeship in 2015.

While balancing his new role as an Aboriginal Environmental Health Field Support Officer and his busy family life Sonny completed his Post Graduate qualification in 2016 and is now recognised as both a qualified Environmental Health Officer and more recently the Acting Manager of the Aboriginal Environmental Health team.
