Tanaio Anau

Torres Strait Island Regional Council

Tanaio Anau is the environmental health worker for Boigu Island community. Boigu is the most northerly inhabited island of Queensland and of Australia. It is part of the top-western group of the Torres Strait Islands. The mainland of Papua New Guinea is only 6km away Boigu. Miss Anau has been employed by the Torres Strait Island Regional Council since 2014. Environmental workers play a pivotal role to help protect the communities from pests and diseases that have the potential to pose environmental threats. However, there is a great network of partnership and support from other stakeholders and government agencies to help promote health education and awareness with environmental issues on the ground. Although it may throw unique challenges Anau is privileged to be apart of a great team whose passion is to
maintain health and safety to benefit each island communities. This job has created an opportunity pathway to pursue a career in health where Miss Anau is now studying to become a registered midwife at the Australian Catholic University.
