Main Presenter Biography Aquila Gela is a descendant of the Kulkalgal Nation (Central Islands - Zenadh Kes) from Masig Ailan and the Kemer Kemer Meriam Nation (Eastern Islands – Zenadh Kes), from the Peidu Tribe of Erub Ailan. His totem is the Waumer (Frigate bird). Aquila also has ties to Parama Island through his maternal grandparents. Aquila is one of 11 siblings and spent his earlier years living on Kadal Islet where he was surrounded by crystal clear ocean water and the humble abode was a simple tin shed with woven coconut leaves that provided privacy and some protection against the mighty Kuki (north westerly) winds. His family had to rely on small 5 metre aluminium dinghy, navigating the water that separated Kadal from Masig. Aquila and his family eventually moved to Masig where he currently resides. Main Presenter Biography Talisa Griffiths (nee Smith) is a proud Wiradjuri woman from far west NSW. She is currently in her final year of her Bachelor of Science (environment and health) degree at Western Sydney University and is part of NSW Health’s Aboriginal Environmental Health Officer Training Program in conjunction with Bathurst Regional Council. Talisa was a semi-finalist for the 7News Young Achiever – Indigenous Achiever Award in 2022 and was awarded Trainee of the year at Orange NSW NAIDOC Week Ball in 2018. Talisa has a special interest in Indigenous health, and prior to her current role, was an Aboriginal Health Practitioner heavily involved with the creation and implementation of various health programs. Alongside this project on skin penetration, Talisa is facilitating an arbovirus monitoring program across Bathurst, developing bi-monthly food safety newsletters, and undertaking a variety of inspections relating to food safety and public health matters.
